IT

It’s beginning to look a lot like Phish-mas

Be aware of common tactics scammers use to take advantage of holiday shoppers.

The holiday shopping frenzy is prime season for cybercriminals. Cybersecurity firms, banks, and retailers all anticipate a surge in threats this season with scammers blurring the lines between legitimate store discounts and fraudulent markdowns. It’s crucial to extend your awareness beyond the workplace and educate friends and family on holiday shopping red flags to prevent scammers from taking advantage. Below are three common tactics to look for:

  • Package delivery scams. You know what you ordered online, don’t get tricked into thinking you got something for free. Maybe someone bought a gift on your behalf? Call them to verify.
  • Fake ads. Facebook and Instagram report 44% of all complaints are due to fraudulent/fake ads. If you missed the Black Friday sale, don’t think you’re getting a second chance. When in doubt, go to the actual retailer’s website or use the app that you’ve used in the past to check if the markdown is legitimate.
  • Donation requests. Anything gift card, wire transfer, or crypto where a “friend, family, or coworker” is asking for this form of help. This is a telltale sign of a scammer. When in doubt, call the person asking.

If your information is comprised, call your bank or credit card company to open a claim and report to the police. Depending on the severity, you may need to protect your credit or even work with the FBI. Have further questions? Reach out to IT Director, Joe Leigh, at jleigh@kompasskapital.com. Stay safe out there and happy shopping!

CORPORATE AFFAIRS

Blood drive, toy drive, and a Snowball Social!

We have three events coming up soon to help make the holidays bright.

American Red Cross Blood Drive

Kompass Kapital will hold its next quarterly Blood Drive on January 10 from 10:30 AM – 4 PM in the 9800 1st Floor Training Room.

Every day, blood donors help patients of all ages: accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those battling cancer. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Your blood donation can help save lives!

Click HERE to schedule your appointment.

KVC Toy Drive

Spread joy this season with charitable giving! Join us in supporting the KVC Toy Drive, bringing holiday cheer to children in the foster care system. Donate new and unwrapped toys, gift cards and clothing for children and teenagers to enjoy.

Place your toy donations in the bin we’ve set up in the first-floor kitchen at our 9800 Metcalf location, or gifts can be shipped directly to KVC Kansas offices or dropped off at one of their locations by December 20. Find a drop off location at kansas.kvc.org/locations/.

Snowball Social

Get into the holiday spirit at the Snowball Social on December 13, from 4 – 6 PM in the first-floor kitchen and training room. Enjoy snacks, hot cocoa, cider, and raffle drawings. If you’re able, bring in a new, unwrapped toy for the KVC Toy Drive to earn an extra raffle ticket.

We will hold our next KKM Olympics competition at the event to determine the winner of the Q4 Olympics. The task will be a “Marshmallow Tower Challenge.” Each OpCo will need to assign at least three participants to compete.

We’ll see you there!

Meet Rob McCaslin, Director of Business Development

Rob brings over 20 years of banking, underwriting, and financial experience to Kompass Funding.

Rob McCaslin joined Kompass Funding in June, bringing over 20 years of banking, underwriting, and financial experience to our team. In his first six months, Rob has added 15 opportunities to our pipeline and helped close two new loan deals. His expertise is not only improving underwriting and structure deals but also providing a new perspective to our vision and long-term goals.

On a personal level, Rob is truly a jack of all trades. He served 12 years as a United States Marine and enjoys hunting, gardening, and hanging out with friends and family. His most recent personal accomplishment (and self-proclaimed highest accomplishment) was shooting a 325-pound white tailed deer named “Lucky” after a seven-year pursuit. His summer garden also produces the largest tomatoes and hottest jalapenos you’ll ever eat. Stop by the office and introduce yourself to Rob if you haven’t already!

General Building Reminders & Updates

Non-Smoking Building

As a friendly reminder, please be mindful of our community’s non-smoking policy within the premises. To stay in compliance with our LEED Certification, this encompasses inside and outside the building, including the parking lot. Your cooperation ensures a clean and comfortable environment for everyone.

Koi Pond

We now have residents in our Koi Pond! Visit our new fish friends in the Koi Pond during lunch or an afternoon clarity break, if you’re up to braving the cold.

Heated Pavers

The building features heated pavers in front of the building and leading into the pavilion so people can walk safely from one place to another without worrying about the winter elements.
